Ally McCoist says Hugo Ekitike did something quite astounding after replacing Alexander Isak for Liverpool

Ally McCoist has claimed that Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike did something astounding in the Champions League win over Atletico Madrid.

The Reds and Los Colchoneros played out a thrilling encounter at Anfield on Wednesday evening, which was settled by a dramatic late goal.

Liverpool raced into a two-goal lead by the six-minute mark thanks to goals from Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

Marcos Llorente then scored a brace to put the visitors in contention for a draw, only for captain Virgil van Dijk to pop up with an injury-time header.

Alexander Isak made his Liverpool debut and he looked bright, but it was something his replacement did which impressed Ally McCoist.

Ally McCoist impressed by Hugo Ekitike movement

Midway through the second half, a superb Dominik Szoboszlai pass put Mohamed Salah through on goal, though he ended up being forced out wide.

He lofted a cross into the box and, though it didn’t fall particularly kindly for Ekitike, the Frenchman did well to get a connection on it.

McCoist loved Ekitike’s movement in the build-up to the chance, though he did also feel the Frenchman could have done more to let Florian Wirtz in.

“Ekitike’s movement is nothing short of magnificent,” McCoist said on TNT Sports.

“He goes to the front post and realises he has no chance of getting it, so move to the back post.”

McCoist added: “But one thing I would say is he could’ve left space for Wirtz.”

How Hugo Ekitike fared against Atletico Madrid

Ekitike had started every game for Liverpool prior to the Atletico Madrid game, but Isak took his spot in the starting XI for the encounter at Anfield.

Ekitike needed some time to get up to speed in the game and, though he worked hard, he did miss a gilt-edged opportunity in the latter stages of the game.

All in all, Ekitike was a decent performer for Liverpool as they got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start.

Considering Ekitike was on the bench, there’s a good chance he will start in Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
