Ally McCoist has revealed he sent a message to Rangers star Jermain Defoe after his Old Firm performance at the weekend.
Veteran striker Defoe, 38, was given a late cameo display in the emphatic 4-1 victory against Glasgow rivals Celtic at Parkhead.
Defoe entered the action in the 86th minute with the win already in the bag, but he popped up with a stoppage time goal with his weaker left foot into the bottom corner.
He’s scored six time in his 18 appearances across all competitions this season.
Despite not play a huge role on the pitch, his experience within the squad has surely been a massive help for the Scottish giants in helping them romp to the league title.
The England forward has shown his class at the back end of his career by scoring 31 goals in 70 appearances for Rangers.
Pundit and ex-Gers star McCoist claimed that he sent Defoe a message after the win over Celtic.
“I would keep Defoe. You saw his goal against Celtic. Clearly, he will not be getting as much game time as he would have hoped or wanted,” McCoist said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“But I sent him a wee message immediately after the game when he scored his goal because you could see how much it meant to him to score it.
“He’s a great professional and these guys are worth their weight in gold. You cannot buy what they have got passing it onto the kids who are coming through and the other players.”
Defoe is the perfect role model for young footballers, as he’s still the ultimate professional aged 38 who still looks in great shape.
The forward will have been driving on his teammates in training, and what a senior figure he is to have around the group.
If he had come to Scotland earlier in his career, he would have tormented defences.
Instead, he scored 163 goals in 496 Premier League appearances.
