Despite Rangers securing a crucial win on Thursday night in the Europa League, Ally McCoist did criticise their centre-forward Alfredo Morelos for his contribution.
The Gers sealed qualification to the Europa League knockout rounds with a 3-2 victory at Ibrox against Standard Liege, coming from behind on two occasions in a thrilling fixture.
Steven Gerrard’s side showed their steel by coming from behind twice in the first-half and in-form midfielder Scott Arfield eventually fired in the winner in the 63rd minute.
The Scottish giants have stretched their remarkable unbeaten run this season to show the kind of form they are in and travel to Ross County next on Sunday lunchtime.
But McCoist did single out Rangers man Morelos as one negative from the game:
“I just felt in general play he’s got to do more, and by that I mean he’s got to help his defenders and midfield out. Get them up the park. Get them a throw-in. Get them a free-kick. Take the pressure off them. He was disappointing tonight,” McCoist told BT Sport 3 (10:15pm, 3 December).
Morelos didn’t look too pleased when he was substituted off in the closing stages of the Standard Liege match, perhaps because he knew it wasn’t his finest performance.
The 24-year-old striker showed a great work-rate in the final third, but he just couldn’t get the ball to stick on several occasions and had to keep battling away without much end product.
It’s been a decent individual start to the season for him, but by his standards he may be somewhat disappointed with seven goals from 19 games and will feel he’s got another level he can still reach.
