Ally McCoist says 27-year-old Tottenham player was ‘different class’ at Goodison Park on Saturday

Ally McCoist has labelled James Maddison’s latest display for Tottenham Hotspur as ‘different class’.

Tottenham were denied all three points at Goodison Park on Saturday after a late Jarrad Branthwaite equaliser.

Ange Postecoglou’s men were ultimately undone by two set-pieces on the day, which cancelled out an exceptional brace from Richarlison.

The Brazil star continued his fine form and his second of the game was a delightful finish from outside the box.

James Maddison set the 26-year-old up with some neat footwork on the edge of Everton’s penalty area to round off an impressive display.

Ally McCoist has been discussing the midfielder’s chances of heading to Euro 2024 and singled Maddison out for praise after his performance at Everton.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist was asked if he believes Maddison will make Southgate’s squad for this year’s Euros.

“Absolutely,” the pundit responded. “I know he’s been out for a while with injury but he was different class and I thought he was different class at Goodison Park.

“He’s a certainty. I think the discussion should be whether he starts or not, never mind whether he goes.”

Maddison has started just two games since his return to action against Man City last month.

The Englishman was a pivotal figure in Spurs’ early season success and it’s a huge boost for Postecoglou to have him back in action.

Tottenham have been lacking that creative spark in midfield, despite both Giovani Lo Celso and Dejan Kulusevski stepping up well in his absence.

He displayed his class once again on Saturday as his quick footwork created the necessary space for Richarlison to net Spurs’ second goal of the game.

Despite a disappointing result over the weekend, things are just starting to look up for Postecoglou. Pape Matar Sarr returned to action at Goodison Park after his AFCON tournament came to an end last week.

Sarr will be joined by Yves Bissouma after Mali were knocked out of the competition over the weekend, while Heung-Min Son should also return by mid February.
