Ally McCoist has responded when asked on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT (Thursday, 07:45am) whether Mauricio Pochettino would take the Newcastle United job – and he believes Steve Bruce deserves backing.

Mike Ashley’s 13-year reign is closer to ending than it ever has, with Toon fans excited that the club may finally rid themselves of the heavily-criticised owner. Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners are looking to strike a deal.

Her firm, which has the backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), is believed to have struck a £300million deal. PIF are said to be in the same financial leagues as Manchester City’s owners.

Staveley, and the Reuben Brothers are said to get 10% of Newcastle each in such a deal – while PIF will control 80%. As with any takeover, rumours about a new manager have emerged. McCoist responded when asked if Pochettino would move to the Toon.

“We’re talking about Pochettino. Why not give Brucey the money? Is it just because he’s not sexy enough?” McCoist said, jumping to the defence of Newcastle’s current manager – who replaced Rafa Benitez last summer.

TBR’s view – Has Bruce done enough to earn chance?

Yes. Though Newcastle supporters might be somewhat fed up with the defensive style of play under Bruce, he has kept Newcastle miles away from the relegation zone – they currently sit in 13th, eight points above 18th place.

Many idolised Rafa Benitez in comparision to Bruce, yet Bruce has done just as well as the Spaniard that left Newcastle last summer. Despite facing adversity, Bruce has impressed as boss and is a Geordie at heart.

He deserves the chance to spearhead Newcastle’s rise.
