Ally McCoist has responded when asked on TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 7.26AM) if Tottenham Hotspur could make an approach to lure England manager Gareth Southgate to Spurs after this summer’s European Championships.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager having sacked Jose Mourinho. Interim manager Ryan Mason is not expected to take the reigns on a full-time basis, but Julian Nagelsmann is set to move to Bayern rather than Spurs.

Other contenders include Roberto Martinez, Erik Ten Hag, Maurizio Sarri, Eddie Howe and more. The Telegraph has also reported in the last 24 hours that there are admirers of Three Lions boss Southgate at Spurs.

McCoist has told TalkSPORT that he believes it would be ironic for Southgate’s future to be the main rumour this summer amid links with Tottenham – rather than his players, including Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice and Harry Kane.

“The irony is that Southgate has said he doesn’t want players futures spoken about – and it will be his,”McCoist said. “He’s doing a great job with England, it’s strange he hasn’t already been linked. Daniel Levy has a massive decision.”

TBR’s view – Is Southgate a good appointment for Tottenham?

Southgate is a top manager, a classy gaffer that suits international management. At club level, he has only ever managed Middlesbrough and in 151 games as boss – he only ever guided the Teesside club to 45 wins.

A win rate of less than 30% should be considered if Tottenham are to go in for Southgate. Clearly, he has improved as a manager since then – but it has been on the international stage. There are better options out there for Spurs.
