Ally McCoist hailed Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin after his England performance on Thursday night.

Gareth Southgate’s England cruised to a 5-0 win at Wembley over minnows San Marino in a World Cup qualifier.

Calvert-Lewin, who spearheaded the attack, got himself on the scoresheet twice to continue his fantastic start to international football.

He’s in the Three Lions squad as the back-up striker to captain Harry Kane, but he’s now scored four goals in his six senior caps.

The 24-year-old netted one trademark header against San Marino from a Reece James cross, as well as a simple close-range finish from a Jesse Lingard pass.

McCoist singled out the Everton centre-forward for praise after last night’s display.

“He knows what he wants. You watch him and you listen to him, he knows what he’s all about. He wants to score goals. He’s determined, he’s focused, and he’s grabbing his opportunity. He’s one of these players that plays on confidence,” McCoist told ITV.

Despite the fact Ollie Watkins marked his England debut last night with a goal off the bench, there is no doubt that Calvert-Lewin is the main understudy right now to Kane in Southgate’s squad.

His club form has seen him net 19 goals in 31 games so far this season in all competitions for Everton, and the signs are that he’s continuing to improve.

He’s got the skillset to lead the line with clever hold up play, as well as being a natural striker with great movement in the box.
