Ally McCoist disagrees with Jurgen Klopp’s verdict on Florian Wirtz’s performances so far for Liverpool.
Florian Wirtz has endured a brutal start to life at Anfield since arriving in a staggering £116million deal from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer.
The playmaker is yet to score his first goal or record an assist in the Premier League, and pundits believe he is struggling to get to grips with the pace of the top-flight.
But while Jurgen Klopp is confident he will eventually come good, describing him as a “once-in-a-century talent”, McCoist is not so sure.

Ally McCoist says Jurgen Klopp praise was too much
Klopp couldn’t speak highly enough of Wirtz, saying his “quality is so outstanding” and playing down the “exaggerated” discussions over his displays.
According to Opta, Wirtz even created the most chances in the Premier League after the first six games of the season, but Arne Slot opted to remove him from the firing line for the defeat against Chelsea before the international break.
Ally McCoist has been unimpressed and believes he simply should be doing better.
Reacting to Klopp’s verdict on Wirtz, McCoist told talkSPORT: “I’m not sure I’d go that far. I think Jurgen’s maybe going over the top there.
“But I’ve certainly seen glimpses. He’s a very talented player, but probably not enough. But then there’s more focus on him.
“The left back’s not got going either, [Milos] Kerkez. [Jeremie] Frimpong’s not really got going.
“There are maybe three or four other signings that haven’t really got going, but obviously we focus on the one that they paid the most money on.”
Wirtz’s only goal for club or country this season came in Germany’s 3-1 victory against Northern Ireland in September, while his sole assist for Liverpool was in their Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace, which was his competitive debut for the club.
When Florian Wirtz will start scoring for Liverpool
Wirtz’s international team-mate Ilkay Gundogan came to his defence earlier this week, claiming it will be just a matter of weeks before he breaks his goal drought at Liverpool.
“I’m sure the goals and assists will come very soon – if not in October, then from November onwards,” said Gundogan. “No player or person in this world can completely block out so much noise; it always takes its toll on you.
“Nevertheless, I believe Flo, as a human being, and given his immense talent, will get through this phase. That would also be extremely important for the German national team.
“Personally, I don’t have many doubts and see it as just a matter of time.”
