Ally McCoist has told TalkSPORT that it is crucial Rangers get the right manager in to replace Steven Gerrard – after he left Ibrox on Thursday.

Gerrard, 41, has penned a deal until June 2025 at Aston Villa – despite initial reports saying he had only signed a contract until the summer of 2024.

It sees him leave Rangers after more than three seasons in the role, clocking up 193 games in all competitions. He won the 20-21 title, unbeaten.

The two names that have come out since Gerrard’s move are Swansea gaffer Russell Martin, and ex-Rangers left-back Gio van Bronckhorst.

McCoist named both and Gerrard’s old England teammate Frank Lampard, as he discussed the importance of bringing in the right manager at Ibrox.

“It is a gamble, he is untried and tested in the Premier League. It is a gamble for Gerrard – he wants Liverpool, he will have to be a success at Villa.”

Asked about a replacement: “They have to get it right because this season is absolutely vital. The winners of the league go into the Champions League.

“Van Bronckhorst has been mentioned, Frank Lampard, Russell Martin – there will be no shortage of demand. It is so important they get it right.”

Martin, a player that endured a tricky loan spell at Rangers, is shining at Swansea after a decent spell at MK Dons.

His total football approach is going down well with fans of the Welsh club. But he is not the favourite – indeed, van Bronckhorst is.

The ex-Feyenoord gaffer is reportedly said to be keen on a return to Rangers, 20 years after leaving. He played 117 times for the Gers.

Frank Lampard, meanwhile, remains out of work and has been linked with both Aston Villa and Norwich City. He could replace Gerrard at Ibrox.
