Ally McCoist criticises on Rangers star despite Thursday win, wants him axed on Sunday

Ally McCoist has told BT Sport (Friday, 10.25pm) that he believes Alfredo Morelos is a shadow of the Rangers striker that scored 29 goals last season – and reckons the Colombian should be dropped for Sunday’s clash againsy Livingston.

Morelos, 24, has had a hand in nine goals during his 13 appearances this season – scoring five and creating four. But he has failed to score inMc more than a month, his last strike coming in the 2-2 draw against Hibernian on September 20.

He missed a big chance against Standard Liege on Thursday night in Belgium, as Rangers secured a 2-0 win despite monsoon-like conditions. James Tavernier scored a penalty, while Kemar Roofe scored a belter from inside his own half.

Rangers legend McCoist was asked about Morelos’ questionable form, which is far from his best – which he showed during the first half of the 2019-20 season. McCoist believes Morelos should be replaced on Sunday against Livingston.

Asked if about Morelos’ form and whether he should start on Sunday when Rangers host Gary Holt’s men, McCoist said: “Still nothing like the player he has been, nothing like it. I would start Roofe at the weekend, over Morelos.”

TBR’s view – Morelos needs a spell on the sidelines

His confidence seems to have evaporated. Morelos was turning defenders for fun, scoring goals with both feet and his head last season. Not only was he scoring, but he was creating goals on a regular basis. This time around, he is struggling.

Perhaps having some competition behind him in the likes of Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe has made Morelos nervous. Either way, Morelos needs to spend a couple of weeks on the sidelines – and look to rediscover his shooting boots.
