Ally McCoist has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on TalkSPORT (Wednesday, 08:00am) that a Rangers deal for Jermain Defoe is a good move – but it will not affect the future of Alfredo Morelos.

Defoe, 37, remains on loan from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth at Rangers. That 18-month loan deal expires at the end of this season, but he is out of contract at Bournemouth at the end of the season – meaning he is available on a free.

The veteran striker has stated on multiple occasions that he is very happy working alongside former England teammate Steven Gerrard at Rangers, and wants to remain at Ibrox. Now, it looks as though a deal is set to be concluded.

Rangers have handed extensions to Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, as well as Gerrard, and STV have claimed Defoe is the next man to sign a new deal. He is expected to remain until the summer of 2021, and McCoist has commented on a deal.

“Not necessarily. It means Defoe and Rangers fans are happy. He is happy at the club, he clearly is. He’s doing very well, the fact he has not had more game time is because of the form of Morelos. I think Morelos will be away in the summer,” McCoist said.

TBR’s view – A Defoe deal is a no brainer, but McCoist is worryingly right

Bringing in Defoe for a further season is an absolute no brainer. The former England international has scored 21 goals in 44 appearances, 23 of which have come from the substitutes bench.

As McCoist says, handing a new deal to Defoe does not suggest Morelos will leave the club next month despite heavy interest in the Colombia international – who has scored 27 goals this season.

But McCoist reckons Morelos will leave at the end of the season and he is probably right.
