Ally McCoist claims Tottenham must mirror Manchester United in transfer window

Ally McCoist has told TalkSPORT that he believes Tottenham Hotspur need to mirror Manchester United’s work in the transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s signings coming to fruition of late.

Tottenham have now been knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup in the space of a week, suffering defeats to Norwich City and RB Leipzig. Their Premier League form is not much better, slipping to eighth in the Premier League table.

Daniel Levy is renowned for his tight stronghold on funds, but he did spend more than £50million in the January window to sign Steven Bergwijn, Gio Lo Celso on a permanent basis and Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica.

Manchester United, though, have signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James – while even Odion Ighalo has started well, scoring three goals. McCoist believes Spurs need to follow United in the transfer market.

“He’s got the same problem as Pochettino, he needs to bring players in and freshen it up,” McCoist said. “Mourinho must be given the opportunity to bring new and fresh players into Tottenham. That’s the difference between Spurs and Manchester United.

“Manchester United’s signings are improving the team. I think Mourinho deserves the opportunity to do that at Spurs.”

Manchester United have spent more than £200million on four players this season, with Maguire costing £80million, Wan-Bissaka was £55million, Fernandes around £65million and James at about £18million.

Spurs have also spent money. But their signings have not improved the team. Tanguy Ndombele at £60million has flopped. Ryan Sessegnon at £25million has struggled. Lo Celso has been a good signing, but Bergwijn is out for the season.

Levy needs to push Spurs forward, and bring in some players that can improve the team – as McCoist says.
