Ally McCoist has told The Ladbrokes Social Club that he believes Celtic’s decision to splash out a club-record £9million to sign Odsonne Edouard is excellent business, and the Glasgow side will reap the rewards in the future.

Edouard, 21, continues to be in red-hot form in what is his third season with the Scottish champions. First joining the club on loan from PSG before agreeing a permanent deal in the summer of 2018, Edouard now has 41 goals in 95 Celtic appearances.

A fully-fledged France Under-21 international, the impressive striker is boasting comparisons with the prolific Moussa Dembele who is scoring for fun at Lyon – following an excellent spell in Scotland at Celtic Park.

Earlier this month, The Mail claimed Serie A giants Napoli are looking to splash a whopping £30million to sign Edouard – more than three times what Celtic paid for the striker. McCoist believes it was an excellent decision to sign Edouard.

“From Celtic’s point of view, it’s shaping up to be a tremendous bit of business,” McCoist said. “You speculate to accumulate, and I think he’s a terrific player. He’s only going to get better. There is natural progression in his place, his movement is fantastic.”

TBR’s view – Is £30m for Edouard worth Celtic cashing in?

You would have to ask, what did Celtic do with the near £20million they did from the sale of Dembele in August 2018? In January 2019, they spent around £3million to sign Vakoun Issouf Bayo and Maryan Shved, but of whom have struggled.

This summer, they spent just £11.5million on Christopher Jullien, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Boli Bolingoli. The rest were free transfers or loans, and indeed they sold Kieran Tierney for £25million.

Yes, Edouard would be excellent business to sell him for £3million more than three times his purchase fee. But Celtic didn’t reinvest the Dembele money – so who says they would do the same with the Edouard cash?
