Eddie Howe faced the media for the first time since being appointed as the Newcastle United manager yesterday.
The Englishman had stayed away from management since leaving Bournemouth in the summer of 2020. He is now back in what is a really exciting time to be a Newcastle United manager.
Magpies supporters have very high hopes for the future but the present doesn’t look great. They are winless in the Premier League this season and are stuck in 19th in the table, level on points with bottom-placed Norwich.
Relegation is a very real possibility for Newcastle this season and Howe is the man who has to do everything he can to avoid that. However, the Englishman has refused to promise that he’ll keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe: I can’t promise that Newcastle will avoid relegation
Asked about keeping the club in the Premier League, the new Newcastle United manager said, as per SI: “I’m absolutely confident we can. But, I make no promises on that.
“We (Howe and the new owners) have had some really good conversations and I have been really impressed with their vision for the club, but to be honest I haven’t delved into it (January transfer window) too much.”
“It is all about the short-term and the position of the team. Obviously, we need to try and address that very quickly and move up the league and avoid relegation.”

TBR View:
The worst thing that can happen to Newcastle this season would be relegation. The new ownership has brought in a ton of optimism, but to go down just a few months after the takeover would be disastrous.
Howe saying he can’t promise safety is slightly concerning, but he is a brilliant football manager. He worked miracles at Bournemouth and although his time there came to a sad end, he is more than capable of keeping the Toon up.
Newcastle take on Brentford after the international break and it will be interesting to see how they fare. The Bees are not an easy side to beat, just ask Arsenal and Liverpool, but with fans fully behind Howe and his men, the Magpies could well pull off a win.
