Riyad Mahrez continued his excellent form this season with a brilliant performance for Algeria on Monday night during a 5-0 win over Botswana as his country secured African Cup of Nations qualification – and Algeria fans raved about the Man City star.
The Algeria captain, 30, scored a goal and laid on an assist during a mercurial display as Algeria finished top of their group to qualify. He was excellent throughout the match, producing his two goal involvements within six minutes of each other.
The £60million (Guardian) star has been sensational this season, having a hand in 16 goals for City throughout the campaign – despite only completing 90 minutes 19 times out of his 38 league and cup appearances for the champions elect.
Picking up the ball on the right flank, Mahrez bamboozled the Botswana defence before clipping a right-footed cross into Sofiane Feghouli who headed home. He then scored from the penalty spot, his 19th goal for his country after 62 caps.
Algeria fans reacted on Twitter to the news that Mahrez starred for their country as he continued his stunning form this season. Many were in awe of the winger, praising his first touch and one fan even suggested he is better than Liverpool’s Mo Salah.
