'True leader', 'Nastiest': Some fans rave about Manchester City star after weekend display for their country

Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game on Sunday as Algeria saw off Mali to win 1-0. The Manchester City winger started the first of three end-of-season friendlies and flicked in the winner. His goal prompted plenty of praise from Algeria fans on Twitter.

Mahrez, 30, became just the seventh player in Algeria’s history to score 20 goals for his country – as he captained his side in his 63rd outing. Algeria were poor during the first 45, as Mali knocked on the door. However, Djamel Belmadi’s side were much-improved in the second 45.

A gorgeous chipped throughball from Youcef Belaili found the run of Mahrez, who flicked a gorgeous dink over the on-rushing goalkeeper (above). It was only a friendly, but it sees Mahrez now go five consecutive matches for Algeria, finding the back of the net. He also has three assists.

Mahrez could be set for an intriguing summer. Having entered his thirties, his future at Manchester City might not be so certain. Indeed, The Daily Mail claim Arsenal want the winger.

Many fans were full of praise for the former Leicester wide man after he scored the only goal of the match, with one Algeria fan labelling Mahrez as a “true leader”.
