Alfie McCalmont scored his seventh goal of the season on loan at League Two side Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night and it was probably the best of the lot – prompting praise from plenty of Leeds teammates, and Michael Owen.
McCalmont, 21, joined Oldham last summer on loan for the season with the one-time Northern Ireland international seen as a holding midfielder and potential future cover to Kalvin Phillips. But he has shown a different side.
Fast forward until now, and McCalmont has enjoyed a profitable season not only in terms of development but also in finding the back of the net. Being used in defensive midfield and in a more attacking role, he has scored seven times.
On Tuesday night, he scored during a 2-1 over Exeter – his second in three league games. The ball looped out of the area from a corner and McCalmont lashed a left-footed volley off the bar, posting a video of the goal on Instagram.
Though his goals have come in the fourth tier of English football, there is no doubting that McCalmont has a big future ahead of him. Another loan next season, perhaps in League One or the Championship, is most likely.
Plenty of Leeds teammates and even Tottenham Hotspur’s Jack Clarke responded, along with Jamie Shackleton. England icon Owen also commented, with Leeds Live claiming in 2019 that Owen’s agency represent McCalmont.
