Alfie Devine: The 17-year-old Tottenham prospect you need to know about
Tottenham Hotspur have had some gems come through their academy in recent years.
Look no further than Harry Kane for proof of that.
In the North London club’s current academy setup there are even more top prospects, none more prominent than 17-year-old Alfie Devine.
The former Wigan man was signed by Tottenham at just 15 (BBC) and has received plaudits from many influential figures.
Devine made his debut for Tottenham’s senior side in the FA Cup last season where he also became Spurs’ youngest ever goal scorer (BBC).
There are certainly high expectations for the Tottenham man, with Jose Mourinho reportedly telling the player that he sees ‘shades of Bruno Fernandes’ in him (The Athletic).
An all-action midfielder, Devine was released from Liverpool’s academy before he ended up at Wigan, where he was converted from a centre-forward to a midfielder.
His former coach at Wigan described him in glowing terms, via the Mirror, stating:
“He’s got his own unique style. He’s got the most incredible attitude, and a real drive and desire to be a professional footballer and to have a long-term career.”
“He can do all sorts, and can play as a holding midfielder or drive forward without the ball. He uses the ball really well, and he’s extremely competitive.”
“There is no limits on what he can achieve. You can see how highly thought of he is by his teammates. He should gain Premier League status on a regular basis and maybe more. He’ll go all the way.”
Devine is certainly an exciting prospect and, while he is still with Spurs’ U18s, there will be opportunities for him to play in the senior side this season.
He also featured twice off the bench for the Lilywhites in pre-season, cameoing against Leyton Orient and Colchester.
The youngster certainly is one to watch and, even at his young age, it is impossible to rule out seeing this season become his breakout campaign.
