It was suggested by Turkish outlet Fotospor last week that Newcastle United were amongst the Premier League sides planning to send a scout to watch Trabzonspor’s clash with Besiktas at the weekend.
It was claimed by Fotospor that the Magpies had their eye on Alexander Sorloth. And those unaware of how his campaign has been playing out would have been forgiven for feeling a shudder down their spine upon hearing the rumours.
Sorloth is on Crystal Palace’s books after a £9 million move to Selhurst Park (fee reported by BBC Sport). Unfortunately, the Norwegian headed to Turkey having scored one goal in 20 appearances for the Eagles.
However, his time with Trabzonspor appears to have reignited the 24-year-old’s career. He went into Saturday’s clash having scored 17 goals in the top flight for the league leaders.
And with Newcastle’s scouts reportedly looking on, Sorloth bagged a brace as his side played out a 2-2 draw. He has now scored six goals in his last five games.
It is a remarkable return for Sorloth. But Newcastle will be aware that signing him will not be easy.
Fotospor reports that Trabzonspor have agreed an option with Palace that will allow them to make his move permanent. And based on his current form, it is difficult to imagine them letting the opportunity pass them by.
Of course, they could be tempted to cash in and make a quick profit. But that would be a gamble for Newcastle given his record during his time in England.
Admittedly, it would probably be fair to argue that he may not have received enough of a chance at Palace. But you could understand why some members of the Toon Army may not be too excited about the links.
And with 17 goals already in the bag, it seems unlikely that his latest brace will do much to change their minds about a potential move for Sorloth.
