Alexander-Arnold praises return of Liverpool trio Matip, Gomez and Van Dijk
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been talking about the return of Liverpool trio Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
What’s the story?
The three players were out of action with long-term injuries last season as the club struggled massively.
Van Dijk and the £3.5m Gomez suffered horrible knee injuries, while Matip suffered an ankle issue.
The three defenders all returned during this summer’s pre-season programme in a boost to Jurgen Klopp.
Talking in an interview with Sky Sports, the right-back lauded the return of the three players.
When talking about Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip, the 22-year-old said: “But to get them, three lads, back specifically from injury, and the hard time that they have had last season, is amazing.”
Liverpool defence significantly stronger
Last season was a bit of a nightmare for Klopp as he juggled an injury crisis with his team’s poor form.
It made for a campaign of extreme discomfort for everyone associated with the club.
The likes of Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak were entrusted to get the Merseysiders Champions League football. And, while that goal was achieved, it was done so in nerve-racking fashion.
The return of Matip, Gomez and Van Dijk means Liverpool’s defence is significantly stronger with two days left until the season starts.
Klopp will be raising a glass to whatever higher power he believes in as the Reds hope to launch a title challenge.
Meanwhile, here is our predicted XI for the Reds’ opener.
