Alex Scott hammers Aston Villa star Ross Barkley for ‘missed opportunity’

Alex Scott has told Sky Sports that Ross Barkley is running out of chances to impress Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

The former England star was covering the game for Sky and made the admission after a 2-1 defeat for the Villans against Leicester City.

Goals from Harvey Barnes and James Maddison gave Villa a mammoth task. Bertrand Traore did grab one back but an equaliser proved elusive for Smith’s team.

Barkley’s impact was minimal once again and he was substituted in the 75th minute of the Premier League contest.

The midfielder is on loan from Chelsea for the 2020/21 campaign, collecting £96,000-a-week.

Scott thinks the 27-year-old needs to start performing if he holds a desire to make his move permanent in the summer.

The pundit said on Sky Sports: “For me, it’s another missed opportunity for Ross Barkley to show up and demand a place. He’s been subbed off again and you can see in his face he’s not happy. But how many chances does a player need?

“You need to take it upon yourself. There are only so many chances that he can be deserving. He missed another opportunity today.”

TBR View: Scott has a point – it’s time for Barkley to justify his selection

Smith has been loyal to Barkley this season and after a promising start, he has gone right off the boil.

He has scored three goals and registered one assist but hasn’t found the net for four games now.

Barkley has shown petulance in the past when being substituted and that won’t wash with Smith.

The boss has built a strong dressing room at Villa Park and he won’t want anyone upsetting the applecart in that sense.

It’s great that Barkley cares but it’s time for the man with 33 England caps to start showing as much passion on the pitch as he does when his number goes up on the fourth official’s board.
