Alex Rae has posted a sarcastic message on Twitter after Celtic failed to beat St. Mirren at Paisley on Wednesday night. Rangers sat seven points clear going into the midweek clash, but Celtic failed to almost halve that.
Indeed, Rangers beat Dundee United 1-0 on Saturday afternoon thanks to James Tavernier’s penalty – which came in the last 20 minutes at Ibrox. It left the Gers seven points clear, with Celtic playing in the League Cup final.
Indeed, the Hoops were tasked with going to Paisley and beating Jim Goodwin’s side – who has been impressive so far, only losing six of their 19 league games. Celtic were missing a number of key stars going into the match.
An inexperienced front three of Mikey Johnston, Liel Abada and Owen Moffat were tasked with breaking down the St. Mirren door. Kyogo, Jota, Giorgos Giakoumakis, James Forrest, David Turnbull and more were missing.
Ultimately, and despite boasting 84% possession and having eight shots on target, the Bhoys failed to find the breakthrough. Rangers icon Rae teased Celtic, suggesting it was an important point to reduce the gap to just six.
Rae on Celtic draw: Are Rangers now in the driving seat for two-in-a-row?
Without a doubt. While Rangers, in recent seasons, are known to drop off slightly in the second half of the season, they look as strong as ever. What Gio van Bronckhorst has done, is tighten up the defence.
Indeed, the Dutchman has only seen his side concede two goals in eight games – and one of those was to Lyon. The Gers look good in attack, solid in defence – and miles above Celtic, who have a lack of depth under Ange Postecoglou.
