Rob Holding made the perfect return from injury last night on an almost flawless evening for Arsenal against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.
The Gunners won 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium to seal their simple progress to the next round and Holding came back from the injury problem that has ruled him out for months.
He found the back of the net on 71 minutes, by which point he was wearing the captain’s armband as well and took to Instagram after the match to toast the occasion.
Two former Gunners stars, Aaron Ramsey of Juventus and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Liverpool commented to praise the man who cost just £2.5 million (Daily Mail) but could be the man to transform Arsenal’s defence this term.
TBR’s View – Holding could transform Arsenal’s defence upon his return
A defence of Holding, Calum Chambers, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney could be the bedrock of Arsenal’s season, which has been plagued by defensive lapses so far.
They need a sturdy, mobile backline and Holding was performing so impressively last season before picking up an injury at Old Trafford, where Arsenal travel to for their next league game.
It’s important that he doesn’t rush himself back and overwork himself, but Holding’s leadership, reading of the game and capacity to improve should make him the man Unai Emery elects to build his defence around.
