As Manchester United step up their pursuit of Toby Alderweireld, it is clear that Tottenham Hotspur should reopen contract negotiations.

According to a report by The Sun, Jose Mourinho will be backed in the January transfer window as he eyes a £40m move for Alderweireld.

Tottenham and Alderweireld have been at an impasse in contract negotiations with the North London side reluctant to pay him what he wants.

Alderweireld’s contract expires in the summer, according to transfermarkt, and Spurs will need to sell him in January or risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

But it is time to enter contract discussions with the Belgium international again as he is one of the best defenders in the league.

Alderweireld has played 14 Premier League matches this season and six of those have been clean sheets.

The 29-year-old has continued to impress with 14 tackles, 14 interceptions, eight blocks and a staggering 79 clearances, according to the Premier League’s official statistics.

The ex-Southampton defender is exactly what Manchester United need but Spurs must battle to keep him.

Tottenham look more comfortable with Alderweireld at the back.

One day soon, Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen will pass the baton on to Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth.

But in the short-term, Tottenham must secure the short-term future of Alderweireld.
