Alasdair Gold suggests Spurs would have to sell Cristian Romero to actually sign £60m centre-back this summer

Tottenham Hotspur may well be in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

Spurs only have three recognised senior centre-halves at the club right now, and they could do with some more depth.

The likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly have been linked a lot recently, but there are some more high-end options that Spurs have had their eyes on.

According to Alasdair Gold, speaking on his YouTube channel, Marc Guehi is a player Tottenham have long been keen on, but in order for that deal to be done, another of Spurs’ centre-backs, potentially Cristian Romero, would have to be sold.

What would have to happen for Tottenham to sign Marc Guehi

Gold spoke about Spurs’ interest in the Crystal Palace man and how this deal could come to pass.

“Who else do you have? Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. A 23-year-old England international, a brilliant player, Spurs have liked him for ages. But two years left on his deal and most top Premier League clubs are looking at him I understand £50-60m will be the pricetag you’re looking at for him. Do you spend that? The only way I can see that is if one of those centre-backs already at Spurs goes. Let’s say Barcelona or Real Madrid come in for Romero, then you have to replace him, maybe that’s when you go for Marc Guehi,” Gold said.

Marc Guehi to Tottenham is unlikely

We think it’s fair enough to file this one in the unlikely column.

£60m is way more than Tottenham would be looking to spend on a defender this summer – Tosin and Lloyd Kelly would be free transfers, and there’s not been any suggestion as of yet that Romero is being looked at by other clubs.

We’d expect Romero and Micky Van de Ven to remain as Tottenham’s main centre-half partnership, with another player coming in to supplement Spurs’ squad depth.
