Alasdair Gold suggests four Tottenham players vying for one position
Five Tottenham players could end up fighting for one position if Nuno Santo reverts to a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Giovani Lo Celso likely to be one of those players.
That’s according to respected Tottenham expert and Football.London journalist, Alasdair Gold, who was responding to a question about midfielder Gio Lo Celso today.
Lo Celso got some minutes under his belt in the 5-1 win against Mura this week but has, thus far, struggled to get regular Premier League game-time. The Argentinian started against Chelsea, but has played just twice more, in the opening two games against City and Wolves in August.
And when pressed on if Lo Celso could see some more playing time as the central attacking midfielder for Tottenham, Gold suggested that it was a five-way fight for one spot.
“It’s whether you think his natural position is actually in that role. He doesn’t appear to have played their too much over recent years, often played in a deeper role at previous clubs or on the left of a midfield three for his country,” Gold wrote.
“He looked really good in the role on Thursday night but of course the opposition have to be taken into account. If Nuno goes back to a 4-2-3-1 then it’ll be a shoot-out between him, Dele, Tanguy Ndombele and maybe Lucas/Gil for the role.”
TBR’s View: Lo Celso to eventually move on from Tottenham?
Something hasn’t quite clicked for Lo Celso at Tottenham. In fact, it seems to be a bit of a concerning pattern for the club, with Tanguy Ndombele another in the same boat.
Lo Celso does have quality. He likes a tackle, is good on the ball, and has a creative spark at times. But for whatever reason, he just cannot get going.
Sadly, it’s likely we’ll see Lo Celso leave before he shows his best for Tottenham and Nuno Santo. And at £27m, it could end up being another costly error in the transfer market by the club.
