Alan Thompson has backed Celtic’s reported pursuit of Atletico Madrid teen Rodrigo Riquelme, telling Read Celtic he could mirror the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama in coming to Parkhead as an unknown – and leaving for big money.

Spanish newspaper Marca claimed earlier this month that both Celtic and Rangers were eying the young attacker, who is able to play in a number of positions – both flanks, in the 10 role and up front. His contract expires in the summer.

The report claims German side Hoffenheim and a number of English clubs are also interested in the 19-year-old, who has a release clause at Atletico worth £27million. Riquelme has managed two senior appearances for Atletico.

Asked about the reported interest in Riquelme, former Celtic hero Thompson urged his old side to beat Rangers to his signature – claiming the Atleti teen could be another example in which Celtic buy an unknown, and make a big profit.

“Celtic have got a great track record of developing young players from European clubs,” Thompson told Read Celtic. “The likes of Van Dijk, Wanyama, [Odsonne] Edouard, [Moussa] Dembele.

“They’ve got a track record of doing that and it works for them. They have a history of bringing these players in, developing them and then selling them on for a lot of money, so I’d say it’s worth a go.”

TBR’s view – Riquelme could be another unearted gem

To have broken into Atletico’s senior side on two occasions despite still being just 19 years of age is more than enough proof that Riquelme is a top, top talent. To earn the trust of Diego Simeone is a big feather in Riquelme’s cap.

On a free, then, Rangers and Celtic would be landing a talent – especially given his age. That, though, is likely to see other clubs interested with Hoffenheim presenting an excellent opportunity, with the Bundesliga renowned for helping younger players.

If Celtic or Rangers can sign Riquelme, it would give them a big boost – both financially in the future, and on the pitch.
