Alan Shearer was huge fan of reported Newcastle United target James Rodriguez in 2014

The Colombian impressed during the 2014 World Cup.

Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez has a host of clubs across Europe chasing his signature for the next transfer window and Newcastle United are now reportedly one of them.

Newcastle United’s impending Saudi-backed takeover has seen them linked with a host of top players.

As reported by Caracol and Goal, the Real Madrid outcast is one of them, being lined up for a potential £28 million move to Tyneside.

Whilst it seems that Atletico Madrid are actually leading the race for their city rival, Newcastle’s interest is likely to impress Alan Shearer.

The Newcastle United legend was a huge fan of James Rodriguez’s performances at the 2014 World Cup, where he first made a name for himself on a global scale.

Rodriguez was one of the stars of the tournament in Brazil, whilst still a Monaco player, and BBC pundit Shearer spoke highly of the player on numerous occasions throughout the competition. He even called him the best player at the tournament, labelling him the ‘star of the show’.

“Without doubt, Rodriguez has to be in the side (team of the tournament). He has scored the goal of the tournament and has been brilliant.

“That Rodriguez strike is the goal of the tournament for me, the technique and touch was perfect and the execution was amazing. It was the perfect goal – Rodriguez’s balance and the way he got his shot away.

“The star of the show has been James Rodriguez.”

The one thing Newcastle United fans might take from this, however, is that Rodriguez has struggled to reach such heights since 2014.

His first season at Real Madrid, immediately following the World Cup, was a massive success but he has struggled with form and fitness in recent times, and Newcastle may fear they are getting their hands on a depreciating asset if they do move for the playmaker.

But if he can produce the same form that had Shearer and the football world drooling six years ago, then Newcastle would undoubtedly be securing a gem.
