Alan Shearer wants Arsenal star to get more of a run, just what Gunners ‘need’

Alan Shearer has told Premier League Productions that Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli deserves more of a run in the side. The Brazilian scored against West Ham, and Shearer was full of praise for the attacker.

Martinelli, 20, has been on fire for the Gunners of late. Starting the first two games of the season, the Brazil Under-23 ace had to wait until December 2 to start again – the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

That start came after he netted in the 2-0 win over Newcastle. The £90,000-a-week (Spotrac) has since started Arsenal’s last four Premier League games – and has four goal involvements in his last five outings.

His Thierry Henry-esque finish saw Martinelli open the scoring against West Ham, before Emile Smith-Rowe came off the bench to net his sixth league goal. Premier League legend Shearer commented on Martinelli.

“Yeah I do [like what I see] from Martinelli. I’d like him to have more of a regular run in there, and show what he can do over a sustained period of time. That is really exciting play and just what Arsenal need. Arteta needed it,” Shearer said.

What Arsenal have lacked during the early stages of the season is a bit of fizz in the final third. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang only has four goals in 14 league games – and now looks like he will be dropped down the pecking order.

Martinelli can be his immediate replacement. But his relationship with the fans and the excitement his performances produce, he can be the man that springs Arsenal back into the top four.
