A huge spanner might be thrown in the works of England’s plans for Euro 2020 if Harry Kane cannot recover from his nasty hamstring injury in time. Who does Gareth Southgate turn to in that scenario?
Former England star Alan Shearer was asking just that in his column for The Sun yesterday evening. He mentioned a litany of potential options. Tammy Abraham, Marcus Rashford, Danny Ings, Jamie Vardy and Mason Greenwood are all mentioned. But then he mentions another player, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
“Another player who has come into contention is Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin but he has to do what we’ve seen in the past month on a regular basis to even have a sniff of a chance.”
So does the Everton striker really have a shot at making the Euro 2020 squad?
A few months ago, nobody would even consider it. But finally, the striker is starting to find the back of the net on a more regular basis. He has five goals in his last seven league games, 10 in total for the season. In particular, he has been in flying form since Marco Silva was given the sack.

He is, of course, not the most cultured of strikers. However, the 22-year-old is a tireless worker and is a genuine handful in the air when called upon.
‘DCL’ also has plenty of international pedigree. He won the under-20 World Cup with England in 2017 and has since won 17 caps at under-21 level, scoring seven goals.
If Ancelotti can continue to shape him into a bustling, busy centre-forward, who snatches the occasional goal, then Calvert-Lewin might have an outside chance of making the Euro 2020 squad.
But most Everton fans would tell you that, right now, he is still a diamond being polished. This summer might come too soon for him. But somewhere down the line, England caps look increasingly likely.
