Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day 2 that Gareth Bale has to keep his place alongside Harry Kane for the North London derby against Arsenal following his latest display for Spurs at the weekend.
Tottenham go into the clash with the Gunners off the back of a run of four wins in a row in all competitions. The latest victory came on Sunday as they beat Crystal Palace 4-1.
Both Bale and Kane scored twice. The latter also provided the two assists for the Welshman’s goals as Jose Mourinho’s men stepped through the gears in the second-half.
Bale has now scored six goals in his last six appearances. However, Tottenham fans would be forgiven for doing their best to not get carried away about his form at this stage. Spurs would have hoped to beat all of the sides they have faced in this run.
Nevertheless, Shearer insisted that Bale has to start when asked whether he should keep his place alongside Kane against Arsenal.
“Yeah, I think he has to, absolutely,” he told Match of the Day 2 when asked if Mourinho must pick the pair. “They’re finding their understanding of each other. Bale said it himself, it’s taken a while, but they’re clicking now. Why would you change that?”
There could arguably be no better stage for Bale to prove that he is really back. Of course, Spurs have a lot to still fight for this season. But the North London derby is obviously hugely significant for the supporters.
If he can keep his scoring run going when they face the Gunners, his doubters will see their diminishing argument weaken further.
