Alan Shearer shares whether he wants Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to become England’s next manager

Following England’s Euro 2024 disappointment, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been having his say on Eddie Howe’s suitability to replace Gareth Southgate.

Howe has often been linked with the England position over the past few years given the excellent job he’s been doing at Newcastle.

And given Southgate again fell down in a major European final with England, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the former Middlesbrough boss.

Southgate will reportedly be out of contract with England at the end of the year, and in truth, many supporters would like a change.

Southgate has been an excellent man-manager, able to forgo the unbearable pressure that England players used to endure, not able to show their best for their country.

But ultimately many feel as if the England manager is now insufficient tactically, unable to get the best of talents like Phil Foden, who was just crowned the best player in the Premier League.

That being said, Howe has been impressive in England domestically himself, and although he’s content at Newcastle, it hasn’t stopped his name being mentioned as a possible replacement.

Alan Shearer says Newcastle can’t afford to lose ‘outstanding’ Eddie Howe

Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast after England’s disappointment on Sunday evening, Shearer admitted that Howe would be an ‘outstanding’ appointment for England.

However, the Newcastle icon didn’t want Howe to leave his former club, especially given all of the changes of late.

Shearer stated: “Shearer said: “I’m for England and English managers. I don’t want Eddie Howe but he would be the outstanding candidate.

“There is a lot going on at Newcastle, the guys who appointed Eddie have now left.

“He would without doubt be an outstanding candidate but we wouldn’t want to lose him at Newcastle.”

It seems as if both Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino could also be two other candidates for the England job, should the FA decide to part ways with Southgate.

And in truth, were Howe tempted to leave Newcastle for the England job then perhaps they could also be two names eventually linked with the post at St James’ Park.

It’s all very hypothetical for now, and Newcastle fans will simply be happy that their English stars: Howe and Anthony Gordon, do look set to stay indefinitely.
