Following yesterday’s feisty affair between Aston Villa and Everton, Alan Shearer has now been having his say on a potential penalty incident.
Perhaps a 0-0 draw was fair in the end but both Villa and Everton fans will probably rue their chances to win the game.

Unai Emery’s side had a string of good chances in the second half in particular, and will likely feel like they did enough to win.
Similarly, Everton fans will feel that Dominic Calvert-Lewin should have dispatched a glorious first half chance to give his side the lead.
That being said, there was a fairly controversial moment in the second half in which Villa strongly believed they should have had a penalty.
John McGinn led the appeals after James Tarkowski went in very strongly on Moussa Diaby in the box.
There was no doubt that Tarkowski made contact with the ball first, but the challenge was fairly reckless in its nature and Diaby felt the full force of the follow through.
Pundit Alan Shearer was discussing the incident on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast and thought the challenge was ill-advised.
Alan Shearer thought Aston Villa deserved a penalty against Everton
Speaking on the podcast, Shearer thought Sean Dyche’s side were quite fortunate.
He said: “I thought it was a penalty, I thought they were very lucky.”

Of course, it is a very fine line between defending in a strong and dominant fashion, but then also going too far.
Everton showed an excellent siege mentality to retain their clean sheet following a late barrage of attacks from Villa.
It’s far from a stone wall penalty, and you can see why the referee didn’t give it, but similarly Villa do have every right to be aggrieved.
Perhaps in the same breath, Alan Shearer would have also praised both Everton and Villa for how well they played in the 0-0 draw, which was far from dull.
It would seem that Villa could do with a little lift in the January transfer window – with one former Premier League player now looking a perfect addition.
Perhaps Everton’s focus will be on retaining their best players this month, with both Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite the subject of interest.
That being said, Leon Osman was really impressed with the progress of a different Everton player this campaign.
