Alan Shearer says Newcastle have a top 22-year-old who works ‘extremely hard’

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has praised Magpies attacker Anthony Gordon after naming him in the latest Premier League Team of the Week.

The 22-year-old Newcastle talent has been going from strength to strength under Eddie Howe this season.

Gordon joined the Magpies from Premier League rivals Everton at the start of the year for a reported £45million fee.

Howe likes to give his new Newcastle recruits time to get used to their new surroundings, and that was the case with Gordon too.

The January signing made 16 appearances for the St James’ Park outfit last season, 12 of which were off the bench.

This season, Gordon has been a regular for Newcastle. He already has 16 appearances under his belt – all but one of the Magpies’ games this term, in fact.

Gordon has also registered an impressive four goals and two assists from 10 Premier League outings this season.

Last weekend, Gordon was the match winner against Arsenal, bundling home in the 64th minute to end the visitors’ unbeaten run.

As a result, Shearer named the 22-year-old in his latest Team of the Week, with fellow Newcastle ace Joelinton also making the cut.

“Worked extremely hard, and scored the winning goal,” he said of Gordon on the Premier League website.

Gordon living up to his potential at Newcastle

It’s so good seeing Gordon living up to his potential and emerging as one of the Premier League’s best young stars.

His time at Everton came to a rocky end, but moving to Newcastle was certainly the right call, with Howe bringing the best out of him.

This is what Howe does. Rather than throwing them in at the deep end, he helps them find their feet in their new surroundings, and then coaches them to the next level.
