Emile Smith-Rowe was the talk of the town at the weekend as the Arsenal youngster delivered a brilliant performance against North London rivals, Spurs.

The young midfielder was electric in everything he did and played a big role in helping the Gunners past Jose Mourinho’s men. In fact, so impressive Smith-Rowe’s performance, that it won him the man of the match award.

Smith-Rowe has grown into one of Mikel Arteta’s key players this season. Much was made earlier in the season about the Gunners’ lack of creativity. But Smith-Rowe has stepped up to the plate it seems.

And selecting his team of the week for the official Premier League website this week, Alan Shearer didn’t hesitate to select the Arsenal man.

“Man of the Match in his first north London derby. Absolutely outstanding,” Shearer commented on Smith-Rowe.

Shearer opted to select just one Arsenal player in his latest TOTW. That call was a surprise to some, as the likes of Kieran Tierney also put in fine performances against Spurs.

But for Smith-Rowe, his rise seems to be continuing and Shearer’s inclusion is just the latest piece of praise in what is turning into a phenomenal season for the Gunners youngster.

To take a game of that magnitude by the scruff of the neck like he did showed a maturity and skill level well beyond his years.

Smith-Rowe was, and continues to be, excellent for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has truly stumbled upon a gem and with a bit of added coaching, he could well be Arsenal’s main man for years to come.
