Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has raved about how Eddie Howe has transformed Joelinton at St James’ Park.

The Magpies signed the Brazilian for £40 million from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in 2019 (BBC). It broke Newcastle’s transfer record then, and that clearly had an impact on his performances.

To make things worse, Joelinton was asked to play as a lone striker in Steve Bruce’s ultra-defensive system. The 26-year-old was often left isolated at the top end of the pitch, but he was still heavily criticised for his lack of goals.

Since Howe took charge of the club, however, Joelinton has looked like a completely different player thanks the Newcastle boss’ decision to change his position.

On The Athletic, Toon legend Shearer shared his thoughts on Newcastle’s latest signing Alexander Isak.

All eyes will be on the Swede, especially due to his price tag. That may have an impact on his performances, but Shearer believes that Howe will definitely improve him – just like he has transformed Joelinton.

Shearer wrote: “Isak is not the finished article. There are things he can improve on, and I’m sure he will. And Howe comes into that.

“Look at the players he’s improved — Joelinton, for example; he’s now one of Newcastle’s main men.

“If you said that last year, no one would believe you but the transformation in the Brazilian has been magnificent.”

Joelinton’s transformation from being an underwhelming striker to a really good midfielder has been sensational.

Many people believed that his career at St James’ Park was over after PIF took over the club, but Howe’s genius decision to change his position has made him one of the most important players there.

Newcastle have started the new season in tremendous fashion. They are just one of seven teams yet to lose a game in the Premier League, and their performance against Manchester City last weekend has given fans a lot of hope.

Howe’s side take on Wolves tomorrow. We don’t know if Isak will play a part, but we’re almost certain that Joelinton will play from the start.
