Alan Shearer says Aston Villa have a player that is capable of 'magnificent' moments, includes in TOTS

Alan Shearer has paid tribute to Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez in his Premier League Team of the Season. The Argentine was picked by Shearer, ahead Liverpool’s Alisson, Manchester City’s Ederson and Leicester captain Kasper Schmeichel.

Martinez, 28, has enjoyed the best season of his career so far – in what is his first campaign at Villa. Breaking into the Arsenal side last season after 10 years at the Emirates, Martinez moved to Villa rather than reverting to second choice behind Bernd Leno. The decision paid off.

Starting all 38 Premier League matches for Villa, Martinez has even earned call-ups to the Argentina side. He has kept 15 clean sheets this season, and while he did concede 46 goals in those 38 games – he is a very worthy shout for the Premier League’s best goalkeeper for the 2020-21 campaign.

Shearer thinks so. He included the ex-Reading and Sheffield Wednesday loanee in his Team of the Season, before complimenting the Villa star. He claims Martinez has made some “magnificent saves” consistently throughout, and has been an “outstanding signing”.

“An outstanding signing for Aston Villa, Martinez produced some magnificent saves over the course of the season on his way to 15 clean sheets,” Shearer said, on the Premier League’s official website.

Just how bad was Arsenal’s decision to get rid?

Last summer, Arsenal were faced with a decision. Keep faith with Bernd Leno, or take a risk and hand Martinez the reigns as number one – ahead of the Germany international. Many would have gone in favour of Leno. But as is the way with Arsenal, they clearly made a big error – with hindsight.

Leno has been inconsistent throughout the campaign, while Martinez is at the top of the tree. If Arsenal could bring Martinez back for a similar price to the one they paid for him right now – they certainly would, without hesitation. But his value is likely to be at least double.
