Manchester City full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko has been named in Alan Shearer’s latest Premier League Team of the Week for his efforts at the weekend.
The 24-year-old had to bide his time during the first half of the season amid injury and illness issues, but since starting in City’s first league game of 2021, he hasn’t looked back.
Zinchenko has made 16 appearances this season, featuring in City’s last nine league games in a row, and has helped Pep Guardiola’s side to victories in each of those.

On Saturday, the Ukraine international was superb against Tottenham Hotspur, keeping Erik Lamela at bay and providing an outlet for his teammates further up the pitch.
“Very good in everything he did, helping Manchester City attack while also protecting his side against Tottenham Hotspur’s attempts to counter,” Shearer wrote on the Premier League website.
Zinchenko was joined by Ilkay Gundogan in Shearer’s selection, the England legend writing: “Another spectacular performance, winning the penalty for the all-important opening goal before scoring twice himself.”
TBR View:
City’s supposed issues at left-back over the past couple of years have been well documented, but Zinchenko’s impressive progress and form appears to have solved the issue.
Against Spurs, he recorded seven tackles and three clearances, more than all of his teammates.
While some of City’s more high-profile stars are rightly in the spotlight for their heroics this season, it’s great to see Shearer recognise one of the team’s unsung heroes.
