Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that he thought that Trent Alexander-Arnold was Liverpool’s best player as the Reds beat Aston Villa on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men got back to winning ways at Anfield with a hard-fought victory over the Villans. Their win was all the more impressive as they had to fight back from going a goal down.

Their equaliser came shortly before the hour-mark. And as a draw loomed, Alexander-Arnold unleashed an outstanding finish to secure the three points for the champions.
It was a thunderous effort from the 22-year-old, who had ended up cutting in from the left after starting the move initially.

And following the game, Shearer suggested that he proved a real point to Gareth Southgate, who was in attendance.
“We’re going to talk about him because of his brilliance today, and he’s won the game for Liverpool in front of the watching England manager,” he told Match of the Day.
“He was bright, alert and he produced some very, very good moments. And I thought he was Liverpool’s best player.”
In some ways, the goal may tempt some to take an unfair view of Alexander-Arnold’s display. His ability in the final third has rarely been in doubt.
But for some, he has something to prove defensively. However, as shown by Whoscored, no Liverpool player made a greater number of successful tackles.
He did also make three key passes, two clearances and one interception.
And if Southgate is considering leaving him out of his England squad for Euro 2020, he should brace himself for a significant amount of criticism as it is becoming harder to argue that there are many better than the Liverpool man.
