Alan Shearer has labelled Son Heung-min’s stunning strike during Tottenham Hotspur’s emphatic win over Burnley absolutely magnificent and insisted on Match of the Day (broadcast on BBC; 7/12; 23:25) that it has to win goal of the season.
Jose Mourinho’s men bounced back from their midweek defeat in some style against the Clarets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Harry Kane put Spurs ahead in style inside four minutes. And Lucas Moura swiftly doubled the lead.
But it was the third goal that rightly stole many of the headlines. Son collected the ball on the edge of his own box before dribbling all the way through before producing a brilliant finish.
And Shearer – who certainly bagged some special goals during his playing career – heaped praise on the South Korean following the win.
“It will be getting goal of the season, won’t it. They might as well shut the competition,” he told Match of the Day. “He picks it up on the edge of his own box, it’s an intelligent run from Dele Alli which creates the space for him to run into. But look how many defenders are chasing him. He goes past.
“It’s an incredible ability to get in there, great balance. And at the end of all that, to have the composure and calmness after you’ve ran all that way to finish it off, absolutely magnificent.”
The 27-year-old has certainly been one of the players who has impressed throughout the campaign. No Tottenham player has had a direct hand in more Premier League goals this term.
Son has already provided more assists this season than he contributed last term. And after providing a moment of magic like the one on Saturday, it would be no surprise to see Son go past his tally of 12 league goals before the end of the campaign.
