Alan Shearer reacts to Kalvin Phillips' display in England Euro 2020 win
Phillips was outstanding as the Three Lions secured a victory over Croatia. He found a teammate with 31 of his 33 passes, according to Whoscored.
Only Phil Foden managed a better pass-completion record of those who started at Wembley.
And it was the Phillips who set up the only goal. The 25-year-old produced a brilliant run to play in Raheem Sterling during the second-half.
He took on two players before weighting the pass perfectly into Sterling’s path. The Manchester City forward managed to squeeze the chance home.
And following the game, Shearer insisted that he felt that Phillips was the best player on the pitch in the victory.
“I thought he was man of the match for England today,” he told BBC One. “I thought he was superb from start to finish. He had an energy, he had a maturity, he had everything you want from a midfielder.
“He was up, he was down. The pass for the goal was superb. He was protecting that back four at times. Fantastic.”
Leeds fans even prouder after Kalvin Phillips shines in Euro 2020 curtain-raiser
Leeds supporters will feel vindicated after watching Phillips’s performance against Croatia.
He has been a revelation ever since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road. And he has stepped up every single year since the Leeds boss was appointed.
He has taken playing in the Premier League in his stride this term. And he has now silenced all of those who bizarrely criticised some of his performances for England.
If his opening day display is a sign of what is to come, Phillips is going to be a key player for Southgate’s side throughout the coming weeks.
