Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day 2 that Harry Kane produced a superb performance as he made his return to Tottenham Hotspur’s lineup on Sunday.

Spurs fans received a very pleasant surprise when the teams were announced for their clash with West Bromwich Albion at the weekend. Kane made his return having previously been expected to miss a lot more game-time due to injury.

The striker had not been seen since the defeat to Liverpool in January. His absence coincided with Jose Mourinho’s side going on a three-match losing run.

But his return clearly made a big difference. Spurs beat West Brom 2-0. And their performance was much more reminiscent of the displays they were producing when Tottenham were being talked about as potential title contenders.

Kane scored the game’s opening goal after a sumptuous pass from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. And while Shearer suggested that he was not entirely sure whether he was fully fit, he insisted that the 27-year-old was hugely impressive.

“What a performance he put in,” he told Match of the Day 2. “Everything Tottenham did well today, he was involved in it – whether it was coming deep and linking up again and setting Tottenham on their way, whether it was out wide crossing, whether it was him running in behind.

“I don’t think he was 100 percent because I think there was a little bit of doubt in his mind there, with the balance and reluctance to go full pelt.

“It’s so clever the movement for his goal. Big Sam will moan that he’s got too much space. But he finds that space. The touch and the finish: sublime.”

Of course, some may be wary of getting carried away. West Brom sit second-bottom. And the Baggies have now lost four of their last five in the league.

But Sam Allardyce’s men would have taken plenty of encouragement from the struggles that Spurs have endured lately. They attempted to stay compact and hurt Tottenham on the counter.

The visitors did have their moments. But Spurs controlled the large majority of the contest. And they managed to break down the Baggies.

Mourinho’s men are eighth in the Premier League table. But interestingly, they are now just four points off the top four with a game in hand.
