A Harry Kane penalty against Burnley today ensured Tottenham can rest easy over the weekend as they kept up their pursuit of Champions League football.

Kane’s controversial penalty was enough for Spurs to see off the Clarets, who put in another dogged performance which probably deserved more than they got today. Ashley Barnes was adjudged to have handled the ball, much to his anger when VAR recommended the decision be given.

The decision caused plenty of reaction from fans and pundits alike, and the onlooking Alan Shearer couldn’t hide his disdain at the rule which allows for penalties like this to be given. And taking to Twitter, Shearer used two words to sum up his feelings on the decision.

For Harry Kane, of course, it was business as usual as he ignored the arguments going on around him to tuck his spot kick into the bottom corner beyond Nick Pope.

It means Kane has now rifled in 21 penalties in a row for Tottenham without missing. And more importantly today, it was a the killer moment to ensure the fight for the top four will go to the final day at least.

TBR’s View: Harry Kane Penalty Against Burnley The Right Decision, If Not A Tad Harsh

At the end of the day, Shearer is right with his tweet here which essentially slams the rule, not the actual decision.

The referee and VAR were left with little option but to give it, which in today’s rules, is the right call.

Of course, if you are a Burnley fan, then you’re going to be fuming here. Ashley Barnes simply tried to get the ball clear and was just a tad unfortunate to see the ball hit his arm. It is a penalty, but Barnes is right to be annoyed.
