Alan Shearer reacts to Gary Lineker claiming Newcastle United star for sale amid Arsenal interest

Newcastle United kept their European hopes alive as they battered Sheffield United 5-1 at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Even though Eddie Howe watched his team fall 1-0 behind, they still secured all three points and proceeded to relegate Chris Wilder’s men from the Premier League.

A brace from Alexander Isak, goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson, as well as an own goal, ensured that the Magpies can still finish sixth this season.

As of this moment, Newcastle United are seventh in the Premier League table – one point behind Manchester United, but with a far better goal difference and five points ahead of ninth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

With players returning from injury and key players hitting top, top form. You just feel finishing in a European place is Newcastle’s to lose and they can do it.

If that is to happen, one man to thank would be Isak because he has been outstanding this season and is probably his team’s best player, even Rasmus Hojlund has been impressed.

That’s 19 Premier League goals for the Sweden international from 26 games, with Alan Shearer stating that he produced a ‘really, really top-notch’ display against Sheffield United, as he told Match of the Day.

Whilst the legendary striker was praising Isak, Gary Lineker chirped in and questioned if he is for sale amid talk of the club having to sell players when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

And Shearer’s response to the BBC presenter is what every fan donning the black and white colours wants to hear.

Alexander Isak scores again for Newcastle United

Shearer on Isak’s display: “His whole game is really, really top-notch. His runs are superb. Just watch how clever he is, he doesn’t get the first one, and he then goes behind the defender to come back in to bend his run and make sure he is onside, and then it’s a really clever finish. He can do this also. He can come deep and ask the different questions of the defenders and say ‘are you going to come with me or drop off? If you are going to drop off, then he has the ability to hurt you’.

“He is just a constant threat all the time. His finishing is excellent. Penalty-taking is as good as they come. He is confident, and cool and believes in everything that he is doing. We know once he gets away over the top, then he is going to cause you an absolute nightmare. His ability to link up and his understanding. Everything about his game is of the highest quality. 19 in 23, that’s a very, very good record. A fantastic player.”

Lineker then questioned: “There is a lot of talk that they might have to sell one of their stars, could Isak be that person?” Shearer responded: No-one has enough money to buy him.”

Alexander Isak’s contract

There has been interest from Arsenal for Isak. The London club are pushing for the Premier League title and could be champions in May.

More than likely, they won’t and the crown will, once again, fall to Manchester City, which will just increase talk of the team needing to sign a striker.

But despite their interest in the ice-cool forward, they might have to look elsewhere because sources have told TBR that Isak could be handed a new deal by the club.

Yes, the team need to add some much-needed players to their squad in the summer. But you just feel keeping hold of the big names is more important.
