Alan Shearer reacts to Emi Martinez's display in Aston Villa draw
Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that Emi Martinez has been magnificent for Aston Villa following the goalkeeper’s latest clean sheet on Saturday.
Martinez was the star of the show as Dean Smith’s men took a point from Brighton. The Villans came under lot of pressure and were very thankful to the Argentinian for ensuring that they did not lose.
As shown by Whoscored, Brighton managed 26 attempts on goal. Martinez meanwhile, managed to make nine saves, including a couple of world-class stops.
It has been no secret that Martinez has been an inspired signing for the Villans. But Shearer still seemed to be blown away by his latest heroics.
“12th clean sheet, £20 million from Arsenal,” he told Match of the Day, while watching his raft of saves. “Only City and Arsenal have conceded less than Villa and that’s largely down to him. He’s been a superb signing.
“What a signing he’s been. He’s been magnificent,” he went on to add.
Martinez’s presence seems to have made such a difference to Villa this season. Opposition strikers know that they will probably need to produce an outstanding finish to stand a chance of getting the better of him.
Brighton asked plenty of questions of him on Saturday. And yet, he found the answers every single time.
It was probably not an evening that Smith and the rest of the Villa side will want to remember for too long. But given their current position in the table, there is every reason to believe that it could be looked back upon as a massive point come the end of the campaign.
