Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer expressed his delight on Twitter after his former side beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League.
The Magpies defended bravely for the majority of the contest against Chelsea at St James’ Park and were rewarded for their efforts with a stoppage time winner.
Allan Saint-Maximin delivered a cross in the 94th minute to the penalty area and Isaac Hayden got a touch to claim the victory.
Steve Bruce’s team now sit 12th in the league table as a result and most importantly they are seven points above the relegation places.
They only had 30 per cent possession throughout the contest, but ultimately earned another precious win and Bruce is proving his doubters wrong.
“Hard work, good team spirit and nicked the win. Defensively solid particularly Ciaran Clark,” Shearer wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Newcastle’s win was another big step towards safety and their resilient defence is going to end up keeping the in the top-flight.
They clearly do lack attacking firepower and it’s an area they need to improve to excite supporters, but striker Joelinton did see a header fire off the crossbar and ultimately it was another three points.
They have so many quality defensive options in the squad to select from that they can manage with their bad injury luck, but Clark has given them a boost following his return.
The composed 30-year-old centre-back has slotted into the XI with great ease and helped pick up four points from Newcastle’s last two league fixtures.
