Alan Shearer reacts after Newcastle Champions League heartbreak

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has reacted to the Magpies’ heart-breaking Champions League elimination on Wednesday night.

The Magpies icon took to X to express his sadness at coming so close to reaching the last 16 of the competition, only to cruelly fall short.

Shearer also congratulated AC Milan for coming from behind to win the game at St James’ Park and sneak into the Europa League at Newcastle’s expense.

“So near, yet so far,” Shearer wrote. “Well done,” he added, referring to Milan and tagging the accounts of the Rossoneri and the Champions League, as well as including the match hashtag.

Newcastle had a difficult job on their hands even before going into Wednesday night’s match.

The Magpies had to beat Milan and hope Paris Saint-Germain lost or drew away to Borussia Dortmund.

However, things were going to plan and, come the halfway point of the match, Newcastle fans were dreaming of success.

Newcastle were bossing a lacklustre Rossoneri side, opening the scoring through Joelinton, while Dortmund and PSG were drawing.

Then, in the second half, the German outfit took the lead, putting the Magpies seemingly closer to their dream.

However, Milan went on to equalise, as did PSG. And while the latter ended up drawing at the Signal Iduna Park, the Rossoneri struck again to break Newcastle hearts.

Newcastle United have laid foundations for bright future

Despite Newcastle falling just short, the Magpies players, coaches, board and fans will all be delighted with how the team fared on its return to the big time.

Just under two years ago, Newcastle looked like certainties to drop out of the Premier League, but then came the takeover, Eddie Howe, and a slow but steady squad rebuild.

The Magpies exceeded expectations to finish in the Premier League’s top four last season and, this term, they came so close to advancing from one of the toughest groups in the Champions League.

Ultimately, a lack of squad depth in a team spreading itself thin across four different competitions meant they fell just short. However, this is something that can be rectified in the next couple of transfer windows.
