Alan Shearer has heaped praise on West Brom star Matheus Pereira after the Baggies dropped back into the Championship following a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal yesterday.

The talented player scored a superb goal to get the Albion back into yesterday’s game but ultimately it proved in vain. That didn’t stop Shearer from praising the player on Match of the Day 2.

Shearer thinks West Brom do have an ace in their pack though and waxed lyrical about Pereira after the game.

The 25-year-old has scored 10 Premier League goals and claimed five assists this season despite the Baggies now being consigned to Championship football once again.

Shearer has been very impressed with the player and spoke highly of him after yesterday’s latest defeat.

He told Match of the Day 2: “There’s no doubt about it that they’ll have enquiries for him and quite a few because he’s been the shining light for them this season.

“He’s scored 10 goals and got five assists and it kind of summed up West Brom and their season that if they were going to get back into the game today, it would be him to do something special.

“That happened. He was driving the ball forward and everything good about West Brom came through him.

“There’s no doubt that there will be stacks of enquiries about him.”

TBR View: Anxious summer ahead for Albion

Pereira signed permanent terms for West Brom ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, costing the club £9 million from Sporting Lisbon.

During last season’s Championship campaign he scored eight times and claimed a staggering 20 assists.

West Brom will hope to have him available to them in the second-tier next season but every player will now have their price.

The 25-year-old has been in fine form during his maiden campaign in the Premier League and that will have alerted clubs towards his availability.

If Sam Allardyce is the man tasked with leading the Baggies back into the Premier League, his first job could be to find a way of keeping Pereira at The Hawthorns for next season.
