Alan Shearer raves about Tottenham player

Alan Shearer has raved about Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale during his analysis on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 (Sunday, 10.30pm), applauding the Welshman’s “lethal” finishing and impressive work rate during Sunday’s win over Sheffield United.

Bale, 31, was handed his second start in Ryan Mason’s two Premier League games and he was sensational. The Real Madrid loanee took his tally to 14 goals for the season, with an excellent hat-trick all scored with that trusty left foot.

He has four goals under interim boss Mason, despite starting on the bench against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. A flick from a Serge Aurier chip was followed by a brilliant finish for his second after going through on goal.

Aurier got the assist for his hat-trick too, laying him off 20 yards out before Son Heung-min netted a brilliant fourth. A good day for Spurs as they earned a 4-0 win, and Shearer has heaped massive praise on the superstar attacker.

“Where else can we start? It was a magnificent performance, it was the very best of Bale. It had everything. Running off the ball, his finishing was lethal, and work rate. It was the perfect performance and there’s his matchball, fully deserved,” Shearer said.

TBR’s view – Bale form a reminder for Levy

It is an intriguing position that Bale finds himself in, as does Daniel Levy ahead of the summer. So, do Spurs need to bring him back in? Or do they need to allow him to go back to Real Madrid and remain in Spain for the last year of his deal?

Bale is at his best under an attacking manager and clearly, loves Tottenham. If Levy opts to appoint an attacking manager that allows Bale to play with the freedom that Mason is seemingly giving him, then keeping Bale is crucial.

There is no harm in replicating the deal that sees Bale at Spurs right now. A second successive loan sees Spurs keep Bale until the end of his Madrid contract, where they could then sign him on a free. He is easily worth keeping.
