Former Southampton hero Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard for his performance in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United.
The ex-striker named the defender in his Team of the Week on the Premier League’s official website for some superb defending.
Vestergaard has played all but one of Southampton’s 12 league games this season and has proved a model of consistency.

He has scored three goals in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team this season and is integral to his team.
Shearer was certainly impressed at the weekend and couldn’t help but praise him.
He told the Premier League’s official website: “Another outstanding performance from the central defender. He was part of a Southampton defence who didn’t allow a single shot on target.”
Vestergaard signed for the Saints in 2018 for £18 million, penning a four-year contract at St Mary’s Stadium.
He has quickly become a fan favourite on the south coast, playing 58 times for the club.
He boasts plenty of experience in Germany, playing for Borussia Monchengladbach, Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim.
TBR View – Vestergaard unsung hero in Southampton’s rise
The likes of Danny Ings, Che Adams and Theo Walcott have rightly earned praise for their efforts in attack.
Southampton’s defending has been superb at times this season though and a large part of that is down to Vestergaard.

The centre-back is in his prime right now and with him barking instructions from the back, the Saints could be an outside bet for Europe.
Vestergaard earns £60,000-a-week at Southampton and on current form is proving to be worth every penny.
The 20-cap Denmark star will hope to continue in the team when Hasenhuttl’s men face Arsenal on Wednesday night.
